Wines You Should be Drinking: Quinta dos Carvalhais Colheita Tinto 2021
in Honor of Bruno Almeida
Recently our wine community lost a dear friend and who was more than just a colleague. For a lot of us, Bruno was the epitome of what it meant to be a wine professional. Kind, charismatic, fun, and loved his beloved home of Portugal - the people and their wines. In honor of Bruno, this week’s wine is of course from one of our favorite producers we talked about. It’s a wine I look forward to always sipping. It’s interesting, curious, and shows Portuguese red blends in a different way you might not be expecting.
Quinta dos Carvalhais Colheita Tinto 2021
Portuguese wines are some of the best for value and taste. Hands down. Their wines have what I always want clients and friends to have when they buy a bottle. Simply, some good juice that is not complicated and so precious you think you can’t drink it now so you hoard it away only to discover later it isn’t drinkable.
I first discovered this wine at one of my favorite restaurants in Lisbon. It’s a place that is lively and relaxed with some of the best food I have ever put in my face. It’s listed in my Lisbon guide. This red blend has just the right amount of oak, where you don’t feel you just tasted a barrel, a great balance of acid, fruit, and structure. You will be shocked at the price and that for it this wine delivers what it is supposed to - a very good wine.
This is one of those wines that will hold your attention - in your glass and on your palate. Once you’ve had it, I know it will send you into a zone of discovery for more Portuguese wines. Value beyond measure and tastes beyond expectations.
Quinta dos Carvalhais Colheita Tinto, a wine you should be drinking.
