The first time I ever learned about a wine and fragrance pairing was working as a beauty writer. I was in France interviewing the legendary perfumer Olivier Polge. Consider perfumers as the beauty industry’s winemakers. Olivier came to perfume naturally. His father was the in-house perfumer for Chanel for over 35 years. Olivier is well known for his creation of Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb and is now the perfumer at Chanel.
When I entered wine I learned quickly that you are not supposed to wear fragrance in smelling and tasting wine. Imagine the shock. As a fragrance junkie this was hard to accept. This was also the first article I wrote for Wine Enthusiast magazine. I haven’t given up my love of fragrance, I don’t wear it at industry wine events.
